Rugby Farmers Mart — CCTV System Upgrade

Rugby Farmers Mart is one of the largest livestock markets in the Midlands, handling the sale and movement of sheep, cattle, and other livestock on a regular basis. As volumes grew and compliance requirements became more demanding, RFM needed a CCTV system that could keep up. The old setup was no longer fit for purpose. Slam Systems was brought in to design and install a fully upgraded IP camera system that would give RFM reliable visibility across the entire site, from the livestock pens to the loading bays.

The Challenge

The existing system at Rugby Farmers Mart was built around analogue cameras recording to a traditional NVR. The image quality was poor, particularly in larger open areas and at the loading bays where clear footage of individual animals was needed. Staff could not confidently use the footage to verify livestock counts, and the resolution was not sufficient for compliance documentation purposes.

As animal welfare regulations have become more specific about what operators need to demonstrate, RFM needed footage that could actually show what was happening at each stage of the loading and unloading process. The old system simply could not provide that. A full replacement was the only workable solution.

What We Installed

We replaced the entire system with a network of Hanwha 5MP IP cameras covering the livestock pens, handling areas, walkways, and site perimeter. In areas with large open spaces, we installed Hanwha fisheye cameras. These provide a full 360-degree view from a single mounting point, giving staff visibility across wide livestock areas without gaps in coverage.

At each loading bay, we installed dedicated high-resolution cameras positioned to give a clear view of animals entering and leaving the vehicle. The image quality at 5MP means staff can count individual animals and review footage in detail when needed.

All cameras feed into Hanwha Wave, a server-based video management system. Wave gives RFM a single platform to view live footage from any camera on site, search back through recordings, and export clips for compliance or dispute purposes. The server is installed on site and the system does not depend on third-party cloud infrastructure.

How It Helps Rugby Farmers Mart

The loading bay cameras have changed how RFM handles livestock verification. When a vehicle is loaded or unloaded, staff can review the footage and get an accurate count of the animals that passed through each bay. This removes reliance on manual tallies and gives RFM a reliable record for every transaction.

Animal welfare compliance is a growing responsibility for livestock markets. RFM can now demonstrate the condition and handling of animals at key points in the process, with timestamped footage available if questions arise from buyers, sellers, or regulatory bodies. The fisheye cameras in the livestock areas mean there are no blind spots where welfare concerns could go unrecorded.

Day to day, the Hanwha Wave interface makes it straightforward for staff to find specific footage without needing technical knowledge. Searches can be filtered by camera, time, or event, so pulling a clip for a specific bay on a specific day takes minutes rather than hours.

The Result

Rugby Farmers Mart now has a CCTV system built around how the business actually operates. Coverage is complete across the livestock areas and every loading bay. Footage quality is good enough to use for operational verification and regulatory compliance. Staff have a straightforward system they can use without specialist support. The old analogue setup has been fully replaced with infrastructure that will serve RFM for years without the image quality or reliability issues they had before.
